About Me

As a boy Sam Vanderkin learned crafts and sewing from his mother and grandmother. He carried this passion forward to a formal education in painting at Appalachian State University. He works in acrylic on canvas in bright primary colors to depict the human form and abstract it. Sam Vanderkin is a Raleigh born artist that strives to combine fine art and craft into a cohesive work. In his exploration into painting, the craft of creating the canvas has become a significant portion of his practice. He began to create the stretcher bars, wove cloth and assembled canvases to paint on.
